Nuggets' Michael Malone screams in ref's face, Jamal Murray tosses heat pack as Denver drops Game 2

Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone screamedRead more

Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone and star guard Jamal Murray expressed their frustrations in the team’s Game 2 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.

Malone exploded on a referee in the first quarter. He was upset about a no-call after Timberwolves forward Karl-Anthony Towns went through Murray on a layup. He ran right onto the court and screamed in official Marc Davis’ face. He was not given a technical foul.

"I owe it to Jamal Murray, or anybody else in that situation, to voice my opinion, to voice my concern and my disagreement," Malone said of the incident. "That team over there in Minnesota, I have to give them credit. They’re very good team. They came in here and won two games. Tonight, they ran us off the floor."

Murray’s frustrations carried over into the second quarter.

He threw a heat pack toward the court after a Towns layup. He was not called for a technical, but the public address announcer warned the building not to throw things onto the court. Davis said he was unaware the heat pack came from the bench and Murray would have gotten a technical foul.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch was unhappy with that incident.

KNICKS TAKE GAME 1 FROM PACERS AS CONTROVERSIAL LATE FOUL SPARKS FURY ON SOCIAL MEDIA

"We tried to impress upon them that there’s probably not many fans in the building that have a heat pack," Finch said. "So, it probably had to come from the bench, which they found logical. But yeah, it’s inexcusable and dangerous and, you know, I’m sure it was just a mistake and an oversight. I’m sure there was nothing intentional about the officiating at all. But certainly can’t allow it to happen."

Minnesota won the game 106-80. Towns and Anthony Edwards both contributed with 27 points each.

The Timberwolves held the Nuggets to just 29-of-83 shooting – even without center Rudy Gobert.

"We’ve had some really good defensive efforts this year," Finch said. "That has to be right up there with the best of them."

The Timberwolves took a 2-0 series lead and now have won six consecutive playoff games dating back to their sweep of the Phoenix Suns.

‘Bachelorette’ releases new romance novel as Hannah Brown shares inspiration: ‘Dream come true’

On May 7, 2024

Alabama native and former "Bachelorette"Read more

With "pageant stage" and "national television" already under her belt, Hannah Brown is now adding novelist to her list of accomplishments.

Brown won the hearts of millions during her season on "The Bachelorette," which aired in the summer of 2019.

She's now taken her skills to the publishing world with the release of her first novel, "Mistakes We Never Made," which goes on sale on Tuesday, May 7.

CALLING ALL BOOK LOVERS: HERE ARE THE TOP 10 CITIES FOR THOSE WHO LOVE TO READ

Fox News Digital spoke by Zoom with the 29-year-old originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, ahead of her book's release to talk about all things Emma and Finn, her main characters.

"I’m so excited about this book because it’s truly like a dream come true," she said.

A proud graduate of the University of Alabama, Brown received a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and worked as an interior designer before going on "The Bachelor" as a contestant in 2019.

VACATION DESTINATIONS ARE OFTEN CHOSEN FROM POPULAR BOOKS ON THE SHELF, STUDY SAYS: SEE IF YOU'VE READ THESE

The TV personality shifted gears after her lead season of "The Bachelorette" later in 2019 — even writing a memoir and becoming a New York Times bestselling author in 2021.

She said she’s always loved to read and write, but this process was very different from writing her memoir "God Bless This Mess."

"It was very different. I would say ‘God Bless This Mess’ was hard because it was a very cathartic experience — it’s hard sharing your story and [wondering] how people will perceive you," she said.

"When it came to ‘Mistakes We Never Made,’ it was a lot more challenging [than knowing] the plot points in my own life [as] I experience them. But how do you create a totally fictitious world [with] characters? That takes a lot of organizing and plotting."

The romance novel's two main characters go from "frenemies to lovers" during a "wild-goose chase" to find a missing bride ahead of her wedding.

TORONTO WOMAN TAKES NOVEL APPROACH TO DATING BY STAMPING HANDS AT BARS: ‘YOU’RE CUTE, YOU SHOULD HIT ME UP'

Brown won FOX's "Special Forces: World's Toughest Test" in 2023.

She took some of her favorite things, she said, and put them in the novel — describing her book as "The Hangover" meets "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" meets "When Harry Met Sally."

"I definitely drew inspiration from things I love about different things I’ve read or watched, or seen in some way, and was really inspired by those aspects of what I enjoy," she said.

Brown said the two-year writing process was a "brand-new thing" for her.

"That’s what makes it a lot harder because I’m still trying to figure it out as I go, but I feel very confident in this first book because I had a lot of pros helping me along the way," she said.

‘BACHELOR’ COUPLE SHARES THE UNEXPECTED MOMENT AT THEIR EUROPEAN WEDDING THAT LEFT THE BRIDE ‘BAWLING’

The Nashville resident got engaged to her fiancé, Adam Woolard, in August 2023 after over two years of dating.

Brown said through the writing process of "Mistakes We Never Made" she learned that she has "pretty good gut instincts."

"Like anybody starting something new, you can get imposter syndrome, as in, ‘Why am I doing this?’ and ‘Why do I think I can do this?’ What I have learned about myself is I do have a pretty good gut instinct for what’s working and what’s not."

She added, "When it comes to the big picture and seeing a full world and really understanding these characters, thoughts, feelings and emotions, how they could respond, react … I have a pretty good instinct for that."

Brown said that while the book is a work of fiction, she sees herself in different parts of the main character, Emma.

"For me, personally, I don’t think I can write anything that’s not based on some type of truth. I can’t write a character that I’ve never experienced," she said.

She added, "People ask me [if] Finn’s based on any guy in my life, and I’m like, ‘Finn is definitely part of the people in my life' — but also Finn’s part of me."

The author said she hopes readers find the book a fun escape while also enjoying its depth and relatability.

Brown is already working on a second novel — which she hinted might focus on a "side character" from "Mistakes We Never Made."

She is also the host of the "Better Tomorrow" podcast and interviews guests about whether they consider themselves better today than they were the day before.

Russia threatens strikes on British military installations, plans nuclear drills after Cameron's remarks

Russian foreign and defense ministries warned of sRead more

Russia has threatened strikes on British military installations in "Ukraine and beyond" and plans nuclear drills in response to remarks by U.K. Foreign Secretary David Cameron and other Western officials.

Moscow summoned British ambassador to the Russian Federation Nigel Casey in "strong protest" to Cameron’s recent interview with Reuters "about Ukraine’s right to strike Russian territory using British weapons," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released on Monday.

"Casey firmly pointed out that D. Cameron's hostile attack directly contradicts the previously sounded assurances of the British side when transferring long-range cruise missiles to the Kyiv regime, that under no circumstances would they be used on Russian territory," the statement continued. "Thus, the head of the Foreign Office disavowed this position, de facto recognizing his country as a party to the conflict."

The ministry said that the Russian side "views D. Cameron's words as evidence of a serious escalation and confirmation of London's increasing involvement in military operations on the side of Kyiv."

US ARMY SOLDIER DETAINED IN RUSSIA, CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL MISCONDUCT: OFFICIALS

"N. Casey was warned that the response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons on Russian territory could be any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and beyond," the ministry said. "The Ambassador was called upon to think about the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile steps from London and to immediately refute in the most decisive and unequivocal manner the bellicose provocative statements of the head of the Foreign Office."

The remarks came on the eve of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inauguration to a fifth term in office and in a week when Moscow on Thursday will celebrate Victory Day, its most important secular holiday, marking its defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons come in response to "provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation," Russia's Defense Ministry also said in a statement. It was the first time Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, although its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises, according to the Associated Press.

Tactical nuclear weapons include air bombs, warheads for short-range missiles and artillery munitions and are meant for use on a battlefield. They are less powerful than the strategic weapons — massive warheads that arm intercontinental ballistic missiles and are intended to obliterate entire cities.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed concern that various parties have been talking about issues regarding nuclear weapons more and more recently.

"Current nuclear risks are at an alarmingly high level," Dujarric said. "All actions that could lead to miscalculation, escalation with catastrophic consequences, must be avoided."

RUSSIAN JOURNALIST CHARGED WITH 'JUSTIFYING TERRORISM' OVER YEARS-OLD TELEGRAM POSTS

The Russian announcement was a warning to Ukraine’s Western allies about becoming more deeply engaged in the 2-year-old war, where the Kremlin's forces have gained an upper hand amid Ukraine's shortage of manpower and weapons. Some of Ukraine’s Western partners have previously expressed concern that the conflict could spill beyond Ukraine into a war between NATO and Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron repeated last week that he does not exclude sending troops to Ukraine, and Cameron said Kyiv’s forces will be able to use British long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia. Some other NATO countries providing weapons to Kyiv have balked at that possibility.

"Ukraine has that right. Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it's defending itself," Cameron told Reuters last week.

The Kremlin branded those comments as dangerous, heightening tension between Russia and NATO. The war already has placed significant strain on relations between Moscow and the West.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Macron’s recent statement and other remarks by British and U.S. officials had prompted the nuclear drills.

"It’s a new round of escalation," Peskov said, referring to what the Kremlin regarded as provocative statements. "It’s unprecedented and requires special attention and special measures."

Russia’s Foreign Ministry also summoned France's ambassador.

Anti-Israel organizers at George Washington University issue new demand as campus takeover reaches 13th day

Anti-Israel agitators at George Washington UniversRead more

Anti-Israel agitators at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. are urging administrators not to call police to clear their encampment, which has remained on the campus for 13 days.

Protesters in GWU’s U-Yard have erected tents and displayed Palestinian flags at their encampment. They also defaced a statue of the campus's namesake, former President George Washington, with Palestinian iconography, which includes slamming "Free Palestine" stickers onto the statue.

The raucous crowd are demanding that the university divest itself of all companies that trade with Israel, as well as reveal all the university's investment information to students — and now, they do not want the university to call D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to clear the encampment.

"We are very disciplined and organized. We’ve instructed all of our participants not to engage with agitators. Not to engage with police," student organizer Reem Lababdi told 7News. "We have a peaceful study. We have political education. We have religious services. There is absolutely no reason for MPD to get involved."

GWU LAW PROFESSOR CALLS ON ANTI-ISRAEL STUDENTS TO LEAVE 'MOMMY AND DADDY' PAID DORM ROOMS, GO TO GAZA

The anti-Israel encampment has vowed not to disperse until their demands are met.

"They made it abundantly clear that, unless the school complies 100% with their demands, they will not be leaving," Skyler Sieradzky, a senior at George Washington University, told Fox News.

Sieradzky said she participated in a counterprotest where she and others stood silently and held an Israeli flag. The anti-Israel protesters responded to their demonstration by harassing and spitting at her, she said.

University President Ellen Granberg said over the weekend that the ongoing encampment was unlawful.

"I fully support and encourage our community to speak out and engage in controversial and critical dialogues on these crucial issues — as long as they occur within the limits of our university's policies and the District's laws," she said in a letter shared online. "However, what is currently happening at GW is not a peaceful protest protected by the First Amendment or our university’s policies."

She added: "The demonstration, like many around the country, has grown into what can only be classified as an illegal and potentially dangerous occupation of GW property."

Granberg said the university has asked for support from the MPD to provide security assistance on and around the campus.

Last week, House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer, R-Ky, announced that his committee would hold a full committee hearing titled "Oversight of D.C.’s Response to Unlawful Activity and Antisemitism," which will examine the university and city leaders' response to the anti-Israel demonstration.

The committee has invited DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and MPD Chief Pamela Smith to testify on how they responded to "the ongoing radical, antisemitic, and unlawful protests occurring at George Washington University and surrounding public lands."

"The House Oversight Committee is deeply concerned over reports indicating the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department rejected George Washington University’s request for help in removing the radical, antisemitic, and unlawful protestors occupying the campus and surrounding public lands," Chairman Comer added. "MPD’s refusal to assist GWU in their efforts to protect the Jewish student body is disturbing and unacceptable."

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8. It is expected to be held at 2154 Rayburn House Office Building at 1 p.m.

Knicks take Game 1 from Pacers as controversial late foul sparks fury on social media

The New York Knicks escaped with a Game 1 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night, 121-117, and it came with some controversy over a questionable call late in the game.

With about 12 seconds left in the game and Indiana down one point, Tyrese Haliburton was about to make a move on Donte DiVincenzo as Myles Turner set a screen. However, DiVincenzo fell down as he ran into the Turner screen and sold it as though he had been hit hard.

The referees called a foul on Turner, and the ball went back to the Knicks.

"Just in my experience in this league I think it’s best when you let the players decide the outcome of the game," Turner said after the game. ""I think it’s unfortunate that it happened ... called it an illegal screen. It’s the playoffs. I think DiVincenzo did a good job selling it. For the most part, you can’t leave the game to be decided by the refs. We have to take accountability as well. We know at the end of the day we can’t get to that position."

Indiana challenged the play, but the call was upheld. The call drew plenty of reaction.

"That is shocking," Stan Van Gundy said on the broadcast. "You never see that call at this point in the game. I mean, never. ... That is a great acting job. Lot of great actors here in New York City; you see 'em on Broadway all the time. That's as good an acting job as you'll see."

"Entourage" star Jerry Ferrara wrote on X, "The NBA wants the Knicks to win. My favorite take. Well if that’s true then it’s about time. Tough call in that situation but if you think that decided the game go watch something else."

HEAT'S PAT RILEY HAS STERN MESSAGE FOR JIMMY BUTLER AFTER KNICKS SWIPE: 'YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT'

"LOL," Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid added.

ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. wrote, "I’ve been a Knicks fan since 1973 and the referees just fleeced the Pacers at MSG. Ruined a fantastic series opener."

The referees did admit they incorrectly called a late kicked ball violation against the Packers, who by rule could not challenge the play. It happened with 52 seconds left. Aaron Nesmith appeared to knock the ball from Jalen Brunson, but it was determined Nesmith kicked it.

Twelve seconds later, DiVincenzo hit another clutch 3-pointer.

Brunson scored 43 points in the win and became the fourth player to score at least 40 points in four consecutive postseason games since Michael Jordan in the 1993 NBA Finals.

"The little things can go a long way," Brunson said. "So yeah, the 40 points are cool and all, but it’s the little things that help us win games like that. So I’m just happy to have the group of guys that I do."

Game 2 is back at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

A Utah police officer has been identified after he was killed early Sunday when the driver of a semi-truck allegedly fled a traffic stop and struck the officer on a highway.

Santaquin Police Sgt. Bill Hooser, 50, was remembered as a "top-notch officer" and a hero as colleagues and family spoke during an emotional press conference on Monday.

"Just on a personal note, I know everybody says this when an officer gets killed," said Santaquin Police Chief Rod Hurst, "but Sgt. Hooser was one of those guys that was really squared away."

Hooser is survived by his wife of 29 years, two daughters and one granddaughter.

WIFE OF SLAIN DEPUTY US MARSHAL SPEAKS OF SUSPECT PUBLICLY FOR FIRST TIME: ‘NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE’

Hooser’s brother Michael said the family was devastated and thanked the community for showing love and support.

"Nothing could ever make up for the loss we feel," Michael said. "We take comfort in knowing Bill died a hero, doing the job he loved, serving people he loved."

Michael said his brother began his career in law enforcement later in life, starting out as an unpaid volunteer. Hurst said Hooser first joined the San Juan County Sheriff's Office in New Mexico eight years ago before returning to his native Utah and joining the Santaquin Police Department.

Hooser was killed Sunday while helping a Utah Highway Patrol trooper conduct a traffic stop on a big rig along Interstate 15 after receiving a 911 call reporting an individual on top of the back of a semi-trailer.

The truck driver fled the traffic stop, pulling an abrupt U-turn and intentionally striking Hooser, Hooser’s vehicle and a UHP patrol vehicle, Spanish Fork Police Lt. Cory Slaymaker said. Hooser died at the scene.

NEW JERSEY STATE POLICE TROOPER DIES AT HEADQUARTERS DURING TRAINING FOR ELITE UNIT

Police identified the truck driver as 41-year-old Michael Aaron Jayne.

Slaymaker said Jayne fled on foot to a nearby convenience store, where he stole another semi-truck. The truck was recovered in Mona, Utah, where the suspect was believed to have stolen a Ford pickup truck. Jayne allegedly drove the stolen pickup to Mt. Pleasant, where he ditched the vehicle and stole another Ford F150 pickup truck.

Jayne was later found near Vernal, about 100 miles from where the fatal traffic stop occurred, driving the stolen pickup truck, police said. After a short chase, police said Jayne crashed the stolen pickup and was taken into custody.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

European Union countries have approved a $6.45 bilRead more

EU countries approved a plan worth $6.45 billion to support Western Balkan states on Tuesday aimed at accelerating reforms and economic growth in the region, as they seek future membership in the bloc.

The Council of the European Union said the plan, which covers the period from 2024 to 2027, is expected to provide up to $2.15 billion and $4.3 billion in loans. Aid is contingent on reforms that would bring Western Balkan economies in line with EU rules.

"The facility will support a range of socio-economic and fundamental reforms, including reforms related to the rule of law and fundamental rights," the Council said.

EUROPEAN UNION WILL BEGIN INVESTIGATION TO SEE IF CHINA IS DENYING ACCESS TO MEDICAL DEVICE MARKET

The region’s six countries — Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia — are at different stages in their applications for membership, but residents have been frustrated with the slow pace of the process. Croatia was the last country to be accepted by the EU in 2013.

The six countries pledged to adapt customs regulations and create joint border crossings like EU member countries. They also set targets to launch research and development hubs for industry and install free Wi-Fi in public places.

The Council said that a precondition for Serbia and Kosovo to receive aid is that "they engage constructively with measurable progress and tangible results in the normalization of their relations."

Serbia has not recognized Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence, and recent tensions between them have sparked concern among Western powers. Both have said they want to join the EU, but the bloc has warned that their refusal to compromise is jeopardizing their chances for membership.

Tim Scott responds to 'The View' mocking his career: 'Without the Black vote, there is no Democratic Party'

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., responded Monday to "The View" mocking him for his leadership in bringing Black voters over to the Republican Party, saying they were starting to trend toward the Republican side after decades as reliable Democrats.

"Women of the View: My goodness gracious. Let me just be plain and simple. Without the Black vote, there is no Democratic Party," Scott told "Hannity" on Monday. "And since I was elected in 2010 to Congress, before that, no Black Republicans [in Congress]. But since then, there's been seven."

Scott said that "President Trump's policies have led to a surge" of Black Republican political candidates taking office at the "city level, to the county level, to the state level, and in Congress."

"We're seeing Black city council members, we're seeing Black assembly members all across this nation," he said. "There is a wave of Black elected officials who happen to be Republicans. But the Black vote is following."

TIM SCOTT RESPONDS TO TRUMP CONSIDERING HIM FOR VICE PRESIDENT: 'THE ONLY THING I CAN TELL YOU IS...'

"The View" co-host Sunny Hostin had said Friday that Scott was not making a strong case for Black conservatives. Scott got under Hostin's skin last year when he rejected her beliefs on the show about systemic racism.

"Just to speak for African-American voters," Hostin said. "If anyone thinks that Tim Scott is going to bring over a bunch of Black men, they need to just get with it, because Tim Scott is the only African-American senator in the Republican Party for a reason."

Scott is one of several candidates that former President Trump is reportedly considering as his running mate in the 2024 election. Scott ran for the Republican nomination but dropped out before the Iowa caucuses and went on to endorse Trump.

In an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo in February, Trump name-dropped Scott, as well as South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, when speaking about criteria he was looking for in a potential running mate.

BLACK VOTERS FLOCKING TO TRUMP, CAN NO LONGER 'AFFORD' TO VOTE FOR BIDEN IN 2024, REVEREND SAYS

"Why? Because we were better off under President Trump. We need four more years and I will tell you, it's the end of the Democratic Party as we know it today," Scott said.

"For African-Americans, Hispanics, there's no place in the Democratic Party if you want to stand against antisemitism, and stand for the American way, and stand for fairness and justice, you must join the GOP. We are the party of Lincoln, the party of Reagan, the party of Trump, we are the party of freedom," he said.

Biden is facing a troubling trend for his campaign among Black voters if recent polls are any indication. One Wall Street Journal survey last month showed 30 percent would support Trump in seven swing states, a huge increase from his showing against Biden in 2020. A Washington Post-Ipsos poll last month also showed Black American desire to vote was down from the last presidential election.

Scott also criticized President Biden for not supporting Israel in its war against Hamas.

"President Biden: find a spine and a backbone," he said. "Stand for our allies. Be loyal to our allies and be lethal to our collective adversaries."

Biden warns Netanyahu against Rafah invasion as Israel prepares for action

President Biden called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday to warn him against moving on the Gaza city of Rafah.

The president reportedly warned Netanyahu against continuing with plans to invade Rafah, the last stronghold of Hamas in the region.

The two world leaders reportedly spoke for approximately 30 minutes, during which Biden raised the issue of the more than 1.5 million Palestinians currently living in Rafah.

ISRAEL URGES PALESTINIANS TO EVACUATE RAFAH AHEAD OF EXPECTED GROUND OPERATION IN HAMAS STRONGHOLD

"The president doesn’t want to see operations in Rafah that put at greater risk the more than a million people that are seeking refuge there," said White House national security spokesman John Kirby.

Earlier in the day, Israel’s Defense Forces ordered an evacuation of Rafah, signaling that a long-promised ground operation could be imminent.

The Israeli army has described Rafah as the last significant Hamas stronghold after seven months of war, and its leaders have repeatedly said clearing Rafah is necessary to defeat the Islamic militant group.

ISRAELI TROOPS GAIN OPERATIONAL CONTROL OF GAZAN SIDE OF RAFAH CROSSING, IDF SAYS

Overnight, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that Israel was left with no choice but to act in Rafah after Hamas terrorists carried out a deadly rocket attack from Rafah earlier in the day that left four Israeli soldiers dead.

The Israeli Defense Forces has begun conducting what it describes as "targeted strikes" against Hamas operatives in eastern Rafah, a city located in the southern Gaza Strip where more than 1 million civilians from other parts of Gaza are sheltering.

IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said aircraft struck more than 50 terrorist targets in Rafah amid the evacuation of residents in the area and the expansion of the humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi and Khan Yunis.

The war in Gaza has driven around 80% of the territory's population of 2.3 million from their homes and caused vast destruction throughout several cities.

The death toll in Gaza has soared to more than 34,500 people — per estimates from Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The war began Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting about 250 others. Israel says militants still hold around 100 hostages and the remains of more than 30 others.

The widow of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny vowed Tuesday that the rule of President Vladimir Putin will "definitely come to an end" shortly before he was sworn in for another six-year term, reports say.

Yulia Navalnaya, speaking in a video posted to YouTube months after her husband mysteriously died at an Arctic penal colony, said "Our country is currently being led by a liar, a thief and a murderer, but this will definitely come to an end," according to Reuters.

"Don't give up, truth will prevail," she added.

During a ceremony inside the Grand Kremlin Palace on Tuesday, Putin, who has already led Russia for 25 years, placed his hand on the country’s constitution and promised to defend it, The Associated Press reports.

The U.S. State Department said Monday that it would not have a representative at the event. President Biden said in February that "Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death."

Putin secured a fifth term in office in March, winning an election that featured no real opposition.

"We certainly did not consider that election free and fair, but he is the president of Russia and is going to continue in that capacity," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday.

PUTIN LIKELY DIDN’T INTEND FOR NAVALNY TO DIE IN FEBRUARY, US INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES ASSESS: REPORT

Putin had walked away with 87% of the vote, according to Russia's election commission. He celebrated his victory over the smattering of token opposition candidates by saying at the time it was proof of the Russian people's "trust" in him.

Russia's election commission also reported that Putin won over 76 million votes, setting a new record.

Putin’s latest term as Russia’s president is set to last until 2030.

Fox News’ Anders Hagstrom and Lawrence Richard contributed to this report.

With the Rolling Stones headlining, half a million attend New Orleans Jazz Fest

The 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage FestivalRead more

An extra day and the lure of an appearance by the Rolling Stones pushed attendance at the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival to a half a million people, organizers said Monday.

That was the second-highest attendance in the festival's history — just behind the 600,000 attendees in 2001. In 2023, more than 460,000 people passed through the festival’s gates.

"This year’s Festival presented as plainly as ever the beauty of Jazz Fest," festival producer Quint Davis said in a statement. "Watching the Rolling Stones perform with New Orleans and Louisiana stars Irma Thomas and Dwayne Dopsie was to witness the power of the Festival to demonstrate the connection of our culture to some of the greatest music of our time."

EXPERIENCE LOUISIANA'S RICH CULTURE, IRRESISTIBLE CHARM WITH THESE TOURISM LOCATIONS

The historic, sold-out appearance of the Rolling Stones last week was the triumphant conclusion of a multi-year effort to bring the band to the event, after cancelations in 2019 and 2021. Few festival performances have been more anticipated, and even fewer, if any, better received by fans, Davis said in a statement.

Other 2024 festival highlights included Jon Batiste’s only-in-New-Orleans set that paid homage to the city’s piano legends, including Professor Longhair, Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint. There was also the Foo Fighters' electric return to the event as well as appearances by Chris Stapleton, the Killers, Queen Latifah, Fantasia and Vampire Weekend.

Next year’s event is scheduled for April 24-May 4.

Australian woman pleads not guilty to murdering her ex-husband's family with poisonous mushrooms

A woman accused of serving her ex-husband’s family poisonous mushrooms pleaded not guilty in an Australian court on Tuesday to three charges of murder and five charges of attempted murder.

Erin Patterson, 49, appeared briefly in Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court by video link from a Melbourne prison, where she has been held since her arrest in November last year. She is accused of killing her former parents-in-law, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail Patterson’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66.

All three died in a hospital days after consuming a meal at Patterson’s home in July.

WOMAN UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER POISONOUS MUSHROOM MEAL KILLED HER THREE FORMER IN-LAWS

She pleaded not guilty to all charges and will appear at Victoria state's Supreme Court in Melbourne for the first time on May 23.

Proceedings have been fast-tracked after Patterson dispensed with a committal hearing where a magistrate would have examined the prosecution's case to ensure there is sufficient evidence to warrant a jury trial.

She has not applied to be released on bail during any of her four court appearances.

Erin Patterson is also accused of the attempted murder of her ex-husband, Simon, at that lunch and on three previous occasions dating back to 2021. Simon Patterson did not accept an invitation to attend the lunch.

She has also been charged with the attempted murder of Wilkinson’s husband, Ian Wilkinson.

Ian Wilkinson spent seven weeks in a hospital following the lunch.

Police say the symptoms of the four sickened family members were consistent with poisoning from wild Amanita phalloides, known as death cap mushrooms.

Erin Patterson could face up to 25 years in prison for each attempted murder charge, while murder in the state of Victoria carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
